Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly open to taking the managerial position at Chelsea if granted ‘more control’ than what the club currently offers. This interest arises as Chelsea continues discussions with candidates to succeed Liam Rosenior.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Alonso's willingness to step into the Chelsea role hinges on the desire for greater autonomy in his decisions.

Alonso has proven his capabilities, notably leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title and reaching the Europa League final. However, his earlier stint at Real Madrid ended unfavorably, leading to his sacking, where he seemingly had less influence over team operations.

The Chelsea position presents a significant challenge, as many esteemed managers have faced difficulties at Stamford Bridge under the current ownership. Despite being regarded as one of the top coaches, Alonso would need to navigate a tumultuous environment to succeed where others have faltered.

While the prospect of working with talented young players and managing a prestigious club in London is enticing, the recent upheaval at Chelsea, including frequent changes in both players and managers, could prompt Alonso to wait for more stable opportunities.

Phillips also notes that Andoni Iraola is among other candidates being considered, as Chelsea has yet to finalize their next manager.
