Slater, a five-time winner of this notoriously difficult event, displayed his mastery as he earned scores of 9.73 and 9.33 for two deep barrels. Although he fell short of the perfect 20 heat totals he has achieved twice before, his performance was a testament to his enduring talent, particularly impressive given his recent recovery from hip surgery.

Facing Medina, a three-time world champion, Slater acknowledged the challenge, stating:

"I definitely had to settle in. I knew going against [Medina], he’s just so savvy as a competitor."

"That was a very emotional heat. I almost started crying afterward."
