Tributes have poured in for Arran Strong, the 28-year-old British surfer, after search efforts for him were called off off the coast of Portugal. The Autoridade Maritima Nacional (AMN) confirmed to BBC Sport that the search, which began on Monday morning when Strong went missing, was officially halted on Thursday.

Strong, a resident of Portugal, had an impressive career in the World Surf League, competing for a decade and representing Great Britain at the last two World Surfing Games, where he finished as the highest-ranked British surfer on both occasions.

In a statement, GB Surfing expressed their sorrow, stating:

"Beyond his performances in the water, Arran was a fantastic team-mate, respected competitor, and a kind, generous presence whose passion for surfing left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing is a devastating loss to our sport and the wider surfing community."

The AMN reported that Strong encountered difficulties while crossing from Monte Clerigo beach to Carrapateira. His coach, Jose Maria Pyrrait, was with him but did not witness the moment Strong disappeared. Pyrrait recounted their last moments together, sharing that they had paused to hydrate and take photos before resuming their journey.

Upon realizing Strong was missing, Pyrrait attempted a desperate search, stating:

"I paddled as fast as I could to get there, diving repeatedly looking for you... I called my partner on land for help."

Pyrrait expressed deep affection for Strong, referring to him as a son, and wrote:

"Rest in peace my 'son'."
