Elfyn Evans secured his third victory in four years at Rally Japan, significantly extending his lead in the World Rally Championship (WRC). With this win, the Welsh driver increased his advantage over Toyota team-mate Takamoto Katsuta from 12 points to 20 at the midway point of the 14-race series.

Evans showcased exceptional skill, taking the lead during Friday's iconic stage-two run through Isegami's Tunnel and maintaining control throughout the remaining 18 stages. He finished the rally 12.8 seconds ahead of nine-time world champion Sebastien Ogier, with Sami Pajari trailing in third place by 51.4 seconds. Katsuta, alongside Irish co-driver Aaron Johnston, contributed to a Toyota sweep, finishing fourth.

Reflecting on his performance, Evans remarked, "What a great weekend, amazing car again on tarmac," but was cautious about his championship lead, stating, "Not sure, a long way to go and too early to talk about that. We have to just enjoy this one."

In addition, Jon Armstrong added four points to his championship total with an eighth-place finish, while his team-mate Josh McErlean secured 10th place, earning one point.

Evans capitalized on being the first driver on the road, winning stage two by 7.5 seconds and leading by 15.7 seconds at the end of the first day. Although Oliver Solberg and co-driver Elliott Edmondson made a strong push on Saturday, Solberg crashed out on stage 12, prompting a critical remark from Ogier about his risky driving.

Despite setbacks, Solberg managed to claim maximum bonus points on Sunday and remains third in the championship, 49 points behind Evans. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in his gravel performance.

As the series progresses, Evans remains mindful of challenges in upcoming gravel events, acknowledging past weaknesses. The next round, the Acropolis Rally in Greece, will take place from 25-28 June, marking a critical test for Evans's championship aspirations.
