Treadmill Takes Center Stage in First Ever World Championship for Runners
Summary
For decades, treadmill running has been seen as merely a training tool for outdoor runners, but the World Treadmill Championship aims to change that perception. This new World Athletics-sanctioned competition allows runners globally to log 5km on a treadmill and compete for a prize pool of $100,000 and the coveted title of world champion.
The event, known as Run X, features both everyday runners and elite athletes. A qualification event held at a gym in Southampton showcased athletes like Charlotte Purdue, a British marathon runner. Purdue expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "5km is obviously not too far so people can have a shot at it, there's no pressure."
Runners have until 24 January to complete their 5km at an official Run X center, with the top 25% in age categories from 18 to 75+ moving on to regional competitions. The 10 best men and women from each category will advance to the world finals in Italy next March. Currently, 20 countries are participating, and the list of elite runners is yet to be revealed.
Lord Coe, president of World Athletics, highlighted the event as a way to engage a new audience in running, emphasizing the importance of innovation in attracting young people to the sport. The ambition for treadmill running extends to potential inclusion in Esport competitions within five years.
Alongside elite runners, members of the 'She Strides' run club participated to emphasize the safety aspect of treadmill running, especially for women who may feel unsafe running outdoors during winter months. Hollie Thackway, founder of She Strides, stated, "By being able to run inside on a treadmill... you can still be on a programme, achieve your goals and not stop running altogether through the winter." This new championship not only promotes competitive running but also encourages a broader participation in a safe environment.
