Wayne Rooney has voiced his support for Thomas Tuchel to remain as England head coach following the team's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. Despite the disappointment, the Football Association continues to back Tuchel, who has faced criticism for his late-game substitutions that allowed England to squander a 1-0 lead.

Tuchel, appointed in January 2025 with an 18-month mission to win the World Cup, signed a two-year contract extension in February. He expressed his intention to lead the Three Lions into Euro 2028, emphasizing the need to learn from past mistakes.

Rooney acknowledged Tuchel's capabilities but suggested that if the opportunity arises, the FA should pursue former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. He stated:

I don't see anyone else out there at the minute, unless you go and get Pep Guardiola. I think he is a top-class manager who learns from mistakes and improves.

However, Rooney cautioned against sacking Tuchel, stating that there is no one better available at the moment, unless it is Guardiola. He highlighted the importance of World Cup experience, drawing parallels with former manager Fabio Capello.

Rooney's comments reflect a complex situation for the FA, as he noted the strangeness of giving Tuchel a new contract with the priority of winning the World Cup still looming. He remarked, "It's a little bit strange if its priority was to win the World Cup, but then you get a two-year contract before you actually go to the World Cup."
