Elye Wahi, a 23-year-old player from Ivory Coast, was arrested for alleged spot-fixing just weeks before the 2026 World Cup. The incident, reported by The Athletic, revolves around claims that Wahi intentionally earned a yellow card during a match against Metz on May 17.

The French police took Wahi into custody on May 29 as part of an investigation led by the Marseille public prosecutor's office. This inquiry focuses on serious allegations including organized fraud, sports corruption, handling proceeds of crime, and money laundering. A spokesperson confirmed the arrest stating, "We can confirm that a 23-year-old football player, competing in France's Ligue 1, was arrested on May 29."

Following his arrest, Wahi was released after being interviewed by police, and the investigation is still ongoing. Notably, he participated in Ivory Coast's opening match against Ecuador on June 14, where the team secured a 1-0 victory.

Authorities began scrutinizing Wahi after receiving notifications of suspicious betting patterns, particularly bets placed on him receiving a yellow card. He did receive a yellow card during the match, specifically in the 35th minute for a late tackle on Sadibou Sane.

As of now, Wahi has not been formally charged with any crime, and the investigation continues.
