Uefa vice-president Laura McAllister has raised serious concerns about potential political interference in football, following the controversial decision that allowed Folarin Balogun to play for the USA in their World Cup last-16 match against Belgium. Balogun had been expected to serve a one-game suspension after receiving a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but Fifa suspended the ban due to an intervention from US President Donald Trump.

The backlash against Fifa's decision was immediate, with McAllister describing it as an "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision." Trump's involvement, where he claimed he personally requested a review of Balogun's red card because he believed it was not a foul, has ignited further debate about the integrity of the sport.

McAllister articulated her fears, stating:

You're creating an absolute cesspit for the future because anyone can appeal. Any political leader could potentially pick up the phone and say there's a precedent for changing a punishment awarded to a player.

She emphasized the importance of adhering to established rules and regulations, warning that undermining on-field decisions poses significant dangers to the sport.

Discussing Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president, McAllister noted the complexities of his position, acknowledging the necessity of maintaining relations with Trump ahead of the World Cup, but also asserting that the situation had spiraled out of control.

In her view, the political dynamics at play in global football are troubling and could set a dangerous precedent for future governance.
