Demi Vollering triumphed in stage five of the women's Giro d'Italia, showcasing her prowess in a thrilling four-way sprint. The Dutch rider narrowly edged out compatriot Anna van der Breggen, who successfully retained the overall leader's pink jersey.

In this first mountain stage, Antonia Niedermaier from Germany secured third place, finishing on the same time as Vollering, while Isabella Holmgren from Canada crossed the line just two seconds behind.

Notably, Elisa Longo Borghini, the two-time defending champion, faced challenges and was dropped on the final climb of the 146km route into Santo Stefano di Cadore. However, she regained some ground during the descent, finishing fifth, just 15 seconds off the pace, with Niamh Fisher-Black from New Zealand trailing closely behind her.

Vollering commented on the day's challenges:

It was a very hard day, with the race splitting much earlier than expected. Fortunately, I had Lauren Dickson with me, and she kept the pace high before I launched my attack. Now we need to avoid any risks over the next two stages before Saturday's queen stage.

With this victory, Vollering completed her set of Grand Tour stage wins and ascended to second in the general classification, now just a minute behind the four-time champion Van der Breggen. Vollering aims to make history as only the second rider to win all three Grand Tours in women's cycling, joining the ranks of Annemiek van Vleuten.

Looking ahead, the race will cover 159km from Ala to Brescello on Thursday, featuring a flat run with a technical finale that is poised to result in another exciting bunch sprint.
