WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has initiated discussions regarding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s basketball, addressing concerns in a memo sent to teams on Friday afternoon. Engelbert acknowledged the increased inquiries on this topic, stating, “I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention.” She expressed gratitude to those who have handled media questions with professionalism.

The memo indicated that a task force composed of team presidents and general managers will further discuss the matter at a scheduled meeting next week. This follows comments from Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham, who advocated for barring transgender girls and women from competing in women’s sports. Cunningham's remarks instigated protests in Seattle and Portland during the Fever's recent road trip, with a lone protester appearing at the Fever’s home game against Las Vegas.

Engelbert emphasized that the league will approach this sensitive topic with thoughtfulness and respect, ensuring that the integrity of the game and fair competition remain top priorities. The WNBA's collective bargaining agreement states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” but lacks specifics on gender identity.

Two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, recently declared eligibility for the WNBA draft, identifying as women. Engelbert acknowledged the complexity of the issue and pledged ongoing discussions with team leaders and the Players Association.

The WNBA players’ association released a statement reinforcing their commitment to diversity and inclusion, asserting they “will not be used as political pawns.” Support for transgender athletes has also emerged from players and coaches, including Stefanie Dolson and Cheryl Reeve, who highlighted the importance of protecting trans youth in sports.
