The 2030 Winter Olympics marks a significant change in Olympic history as it becomes the first edition to exclude Nordic Combined from its program. This decision, announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday, cites a limited number of competitors and a notable lack of public interest as primary reasons for the removal of this male-only event, which has been a staple since the inaugural Games in 1924.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry expressed that while the decision "may come as a disappointment," there remains a possibility for the sport's return in 2034.

In a bid to refresh the Olympic lineup, two new sports have been added for the first time:

• Freeride, combining skiing and snowboarding disciplines
• Synchro9, widely recognized as figure skating

The 2030 Winter Olympic Games, set in the French Alps, will also make history by featuring a roster of 50% female athletes. With a total of 3,046 athletes competing, the breakdown includes 1,525 female and 1,521 male competitors across 126 events. This increase in female participation arises from four sports—Luge, Skiing, Bobsleigh, and Ice Hockey—raising their athlete quotas by up to seven percent.
