Manchester City fans embraced a whimsical tradition by waving hundreds of inflatable bananas during their Premier League match against Ipswich on Saturday. This event marked City's first home game since an independent commission ruled that the club's Abu Dhabi owners systematically breached financial rules from 2009 to 2018. City has since launched an appeal, claiming to possess "irrefutable evidence" supporting their case.

The inflatable bananas, which were previously seen at Anfield during City's clash with Liverpool, were encouraged by manager Enzo Maresca. He expressed his hope to see them at the Etihad Stadium, highlighting the significance of maintaining a positive atmosphere amid the controversy.

This playful gesture harkens back to a tradition from the late 1980s, a time when fans brought inflatables to matches during an era of turmoil in English football. The initiative, promoted by the supporters’ group 1894, symbolizes the resilience of the fanbase in the face of challenges from football authorities.

Maresca noted the importance of this visual representation, stating, "It creates a nice environment for the fans and for everyone that is in the stadium." He also acknowledged his children’s enthusiasm for the bananas, showcasing the familial aspect of the tradition.

Despite the festive atmosphere inside the stadium, tensions remained high outside, with Liverpool fans expressing their displeasure at City through chants and banners. The match itself featured a backdrop of heightened security, including police drones, as the rivalry intensified.

As City faced scrutiny for inflating revenues by £900 million, the atmosphere was charged, with boos greeting the players as they entered the pitch, underscoring the ongoing conflict within the sport.
