Wayne Rooney has suffered an injury that may necessitate surgery while recording a segment of his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. The incident occurred during an interview with former Everton teammate Jordan Pickford, which aired before the FA Cup final that Manchester City won.

The two engaged in goalkeeping drills at Everton's training camp, where Rooney injured his left hand while diving to save a penalty taken by Pickford. Following the injury, Rooney consulted a surgeon regarding treatment options and planned another consultation to determine whether surgery on his wrist is required.

Sporting a wrist brace during BBC coverage on Saturday, Rooney commented:

“I went in goal and then it was a great save off Jordan and then I’ve messed my hand up. I’m with a surgeon. I’ve been in the hospital and I’m back on Monday.”

He humorously added:

“Look at that for a save! I saved that and hurt my hand. I'm seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery. By the way, just for the newspapers out there, I haven't got my wedding ring on because my fingers have swollen up - I know they will make a big thing! It's hurt but it'll be fine.”

Rooney re-joined Everton shortly after Pickford's transfer from Sunderland in 2017. Reflecting on their relationship, Pickford expressed admiration for Rooney, stating:

“I watched you growing up... everyone looked up to you.”

He recalled the excitement of playing alongside Rooney, emphasizing the rarity of such opportunities for young players.
