Former gold-medal winning swimmer and Australia’s most senior sport executive, Kieren Perkins, urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to modernize the sporting program for Brisbane 2032, emphasizing that some current Olympic sports “have no modern relevance whatsoever.”

Perkins, who leads the Australian Sports Commission, expressed concerns about the future of the Olympic movement if changes are not made. He stated, “If that program doesn’t look different, then yes, we should start to worry.” He believes that while traditional sports are cherished, some need to be reevaluated in terms of their relevance.

Additionally, Netball Australia reports that two-thirds of Australians support netball's inclusion in Brisbane 2032.

Rowing Australia’s chief executive, Sarah Cook, asserted that while rowing has a rich history, it must evolve to remain relevant. The IOC's new methodology will assess proposed disciplines based on global appeal and operational feasibility, aiming for a balanced program that reflects Olympic values.

As preparations advance for Brisbane 2032, the organizing committee has received interest from various sports, focusing on a program that is operationally viable and commercially sustainable.
