Wout van Aert secured his fourth career stage victory at the Vuelta a España on a blistering hot day in southern Spain. The Belgian rider clinched the win in the 192km stage from Almuñécar to Loja, finishing ahead of breakaway companion Valentin Paret-Peintre after four and a half hours of intense racing.

This victory marked Van Aert's first in the current edition of the Vuelta, adding to his impressive tally that includes 10 stages of the Tour de France and several one-day classics. It also represented the fourth team win for Team Visma Lease a Bike in this year's race.

Meanwhile, Enric Mas maintained his grip on the red jersey, holding a lead of one minute and 45 seconds over four-time champion Primoz Roglic. Both crossed the finish line approximately three minutes after Van Aert.

Riders faced extreme conditions, with temperatures soaring to 36°C (97°F) in Loja. One competitor likened the heat to a “hairdryer blowing in your face,” while Sepp Kuss, an American rider from Visma Lease a Bike, emphasized the challenge of racing in such heat. He praised the organizers for providing extra water stations, which proved vital for the riders' endurance.

Mas has been leading the race since the withdrawal of Tadej Pogacar due to a crash. He aims to become the first Spanish rider to win the Vuelta since Alberto Contador in 2014. With the pivotal time trial on stage 18 approaching, Mas's strategy will focus on maintaining a sufficient lead against Roglic.

Looking ahead, the next challenge is a 154km stage from Jaén to Sierra de la Pandera. "Our goal tomorrow is just keeping the red shirt for the next day," Mas stated.

In other cycling news, Olav Kooij claimed victory at stage three of the Tour of Britain, narrowly beating Tim Merlier in a dramatic sprint. Kooij's win marked his eighth career stage victory in the race, placing him just behind Sir Mark Cavendish in the all-time record books.
