Belgium's Wout van Aert showcased his sprinting prowess by winning stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana. The stage, covering 192.8km from Almunecar to Loja, saw Van Aert break free from Valentin Paret-Peintre in a thrilling finish.

The race featured a massive breakaway that initially included 43 riders. However, as the finish approached, Van Aert and Paret-Peintre created a decisive gap with just 3.7km to go, allowing them to contest the finish without competition. Van Aert's strength proved crucial, securing him the stage win, while Matthew Brennan, another rider from Visma-Lease a Bike, finished third.

In terms of overall standings, Enric Mas, the race leader, crossed the line three minutes after Van Aert, maintaining a lead of one minute and 45 seconds over Primoz Roglic.

Reflecting on his strategy, Van Aert noted, "I had it a little bit in my mind [to attack when I did]. I saw the profile and I knew there was this last kicker coming into the village." He emphasized the importance of timing and the dynamics within the breakaway, stating, "If you're able to open up a gap, then they don't want to close it for each other anymore."

Looking ahead, the peloton braces for a challenging mountain stage on Saturday, covering 154.5km from Jaen to La Pandera.
