Michael Valgren triumphed on stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia, marking his first grand tour stage victory after a fierce breakaway battle. The EF Education-EasyPost rider launched his decisive attack just over a kilometre from the finish line in Andalo, completing the challenging 202km stage from Cassano d’Adda in 4 hours, 41 minutes, and 33 seconds.

Valgren, aged 34, collaborated with Einer Rubio of Movistar over the last 20 kilometres before making his move on the final climb. He finished ahead of Andreas Leknessund and Damiano Caruso, solidifying his place in the race.

This victory is particularly significant for Valgren, who faced a career-threatening injury at the Route d’Occitanie in 2022. "When I have good legs, I'm pretty good at it," Valgren remarked, celebrating his win with a lucky Pokemon charm gifted by his son.

Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard, who secured his fourth stage win of the race on Tuesday, maintained his overall lead in the general classification. The upcoming stage 18 is anticipated to favor sprinters, while two challenging mountain stages loom ahead, promising to intensify the competition for the coveted pink jersey.
