A week before the U.S. women's national team (USWNT) opens camp for friendlies against Spain, head coach Emma Hayes emphasizes the team's unique DNA. The four-time world champions historically excel as counter-attacking specialists, but a more pressing query looms: how will the USWNT's understaffed defense cope with Spain's potent attack?

Spain, a reigning World Cup champion, presents one of the toughest challenges for any team. Following the 2024 Olympics, when Hayes began revamping the squad, the USWNT has conceded just 15 goals in 34 games. They average only seven shots against per match, with opponents managing just two shots on goal per game. The upcoming matches against Spain will test whether the USWNT can maintain this defensive solidity.

USWNT Schedule Against Spain

• Oct. 10: USWNT vs. Spain, 2:30 p.m. (TBS)
• Oct. 13: USWNT vs. Spain, 7 p.m. (TNT)

Hayes has rotated through defensive options over the past two years, with Naomi Girma emerging as a key figure. However, Girma is now sidelined due to a recurring calf injury, prompting Hayes to work closely with Chelsea to address her condition. "This has happened too often... she’s the last person who wants to be in this place," Hayes stated.

In addition, Emily Sonnett from Gotham FC is out with a ruptured patellar tendon, leaving Hayes with limited options: Tierna Davidson, Tara Rudd, Kennedy Wesley, and Kate Del Fava. Davidson has major international experience, but the lack of cohesion among the group could disrupt defensive plans against Spain.

The USWNT also faces challenges in midfield, with Sam Coffey missing the friendlies due to an injury. Claire Hutton may step in but lacks depth in experience. The team's strategy against Spain, known for their possession dominance, remains uncertain. Will the USWNT adapt by pressing high or cede possession?

Ultimately, Hayes' tactical acumen will be tested. The upcoming friendlies, regardless of outcome, could help identify weaknesses and prepare the USWNT for future tournaments. Each decision made during these matches will be critical as they strive for success in Brazil.
