The U.S. women's national team (USWNT) gears up for a critical pair of friendlies against Spain, the reigning Women's World Cup champions, as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers. Scheduled for Saturday, October 10 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., the match promises to be a significant test for the USWNT, especially with notable absences in their defense.

Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey will miss the matches due to injuries, leaving the team with a thinner defensive lineup. Claire Hutton is expected to step into Coffey's role, while Tierna Davidson, Tara Rudd, Kennedy Wesley, and Kate Del Fava will fill the gaps in the back line. Head coach Emma Hayes expressed confidence in her squad despite the challenges, noting the need for effective partnerships among the defenders.

Wesley highlighted the importance of discipline against Spain's dynamic attack, led by two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas. The USWNT's defense, which has faced limited challenges since the Olympics, will need to step up against Spain's possession-focused style. Hayes has been experimenting with lineups post-Olympics, but she indicated that the friendlies would feature more consistent selections.

The attacking front remains robust, with stars like Trinity Rodman, Sophia Wilson, and Mallory Swanson ready to lead. Newcomers like Trinity Byars and Pietra Tordin may earn their first caps, while Ashley Sanchez returns after an impressive NWSL season.

As the team addresses its defensive concerns, they maintain a strong focus on World Cup preparation. Wilson emphasized the importance of the upcoming matches as part of their overall strategy leading into the tournament, reinforcing the team's commitment to success.
