Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz dodged an early exit at the US Open 2026, rallying from a set down to triumph over Jaime Faria of Portugal. The Spanish second seed, aged 23, showcased his resilience in a second-round match that highlighted his ongoing recovery from a long-term wrist injury.

Alcaraz initially struggled to find his rhythm, dropping the first set 4-6. However, he turned the tide, claiming the next three sets with scores of 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, demonstrating his authority in the New York night session.

A critical moment came in the second set when Alcaraz fended off two break points in the opening game, setting the stage for his comeback. Reflecting on the match, he stated, "It was a tough match for me. I felt great in the first set, but I didn't take time and that cost me. After that I tried to be focused, stay calm and think the good things will happen."

As he approached the final major of the season, questions lingered about Alcaraz's performance after being sidelined since mid-April due to his wrist injury. Yet, his latest match indicated that the two-time US Open winner is gaining momentum.

In his first-round victory against Roman Safiullin, Alcaraz expressed confidence, describing his play as "normal". After defeating Faria, he affirmed, "I know once I step on the court, I've just got to go for it every time. I've got to feel normal. I have to hit like I was hitting before the injury. I'm feeling great. There is no reason to be afraid and not hitting normal."
