Ukrainian center Kate Koval is leaving LSU just weeks after the signing of Anna Minaeva, a Russian player. Coach Kim Mulkey confirmed Koval's departure on Monday night, citing "personal reasons" and emphasizing the program's respect for her decision.

Mulkey stated, "We had a long talk about it, and it was a hard decision for her. I know it is hard because she loves LSU. Kate is a great person. She has to do what she feels is right for her, and we fully support her in that. We all wish her the best."

Koval, originally from Kyiv, has a notable background, having started her college career at Notre Dame before transferring to LSU. During her time at LSU, she averaged 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and played 16.6 minutes per game. She previously excelled in high school basketball in New York and represented Ukraine at the Fiba 3x3 World Cup this summer.

The signing of Minaeva, a 17-year-old who played professionally with MBA Moscow, sparked discussions about the implications of such a move. In a recent interview, Mulkey mentioned that she had informed Koval about Minaeva's potential addition before it was announced. Mulkey expressed her hope that both players could serve as "ambassadors" for sport and peace, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which escalated in February 2022.
