The Dallas Cowboys suffered a shocking 33-30 overtime defeat against the Arizona Cardinals, blowing a 14-point lead twice. Following the game, owner Jerry Jones expressed frustration, stating, "It just really is glaring in a negative way how we could be where we were and end up losing that ball game." Jones criticized the team's inability to capitalize on their opportunities, calling it an indictment of the entire organization.

Despite significant changes made to the defense, including firing Matt Eberflus and hiring Christian Parker, the Cowboys still rank among the NFL's worst defenses in 2026. Their defensive statistics reveal alarming trends:

• Points per game allowed: 26.6 (27th)
• Total yards per game allowed: 385.4 (Last)
• Rushing yards per game allowed: 152.8 (Last)
• Passer rating allowed: 102.8 (29th)

Caleb Downs, the Cowboys' first-round pick, has come under intense scrutiny for his performance. After being beaten by Trey McBride for a critical third-down conversion, McBride taunted Downs, questioning his selection as a first-rounder. Downs struggled throughout the game, missing tackles and allowing significant gains, including a 63-yard touchdown run by Tyler Allgeier.

While Downs did contribute positively by stopping Jeremiyah Love on a fourth-and-goal attempt, his overall performance has been subpar. Pro Football Focus rated his run defense at 68.8, placing him 46th among 98 safeties. In coverage, he has allowed 20 of 24 passes thrown his way to be completed, with a 146.2 passer rating against him, ranking among the worst in the league.

Injuries have plagued the Cowboys' secondary, with Joey Porter Jr. also suffering an injury during the game. Nonetheless, Downs' role in the team's defensive struggles cannot be overlooked as they navigate a challenging start to the season.
