Wyndham Clark, who secured his second US Open title just days prior with a narrow victory over Sam Burns, encountered a setback on the par-four 12th hole. Following an errant tee shot, he managed a seven, which included a drop and a missed seven-foot putt after landing in a bunker. Despite this, Clark finished the round with a two-under 68, five strokes behind first-round leader Eric Cole, who recorded a flawless seven-under 63.

• Birdies on holes 6, 15, and 17
• One triple bogey on hole 12

Clark reflected on his performance, stating, "I had one bad swing, made a triple. Other than that, we would be at five under and in a great spot."

Matthew Fitzpatrick made a strong showing with a six-under 64, notching seven birdies and one bogey while utilizing a new driver. Fitzpatrick currently sits one stroke off Cole, alongside Scheffler, Ben Griffin, Kristoffer Reitan, Bud Cauley, and Nicolas Echavarria.

Fitzpatrick remarked, "I played really solid. I took advantage of the scoring holes there."

Scottie Scheffler, tied for fourth at the US Open last week, also delivered a flawless 64, featuring four birdies on the front nine and two on the back. He emphasized the importance of maintaining pace in competitive rounds, particularly in low-scoring conditions.

Other Notable Performances:

• Rai and Rose each finished with five-under rounds, matching Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Corey Conners, and Brandt Snedeker.

Rory McIlroy is absent this week, with plans to return for the Genesis Scottish Open on July 9, leading up to the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
