Belgium's Tim Merlier celebrated his second consecutive victory on stage eight of the Tour de France on Saturday, adding to his triumph in stage seven. The Soudal Quick-Step rider demonstrated his sprinting prowess in a tightly contested finish in Bergerac.

Despite appearing out of position as the riders entered the final 500 meters, Merlier executed a remarkable long-range sprint to catch his competitors. He surged to the front with under 200 meters remaining, fending off Biniam Girmay to secure his fifth stage win in the Tour.

His win also positioned him just 15 points behind Mads Pedersen in the sprinters' green jersey standings. Meanwhile, defending champion Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey, maintaining his lead over Jonas Vingegaard during the flat 180.4km ride from Perigueux to Bergerac.

The stage, traversing the picturesque Dordogne region, initially seemed destined for a bunch sprint after a three-man breakaway led by Liam Slock was caught just 1.3km from the finish. Despite efforts from Mathieu van der Poel to set up teammate Jasper Philipsen, Merlier's speed proved decisive.

Looking ahead, the upcoming ninth stage will see a reduced distance due to an "intense heatwave" in the Correze region, with the route shortened from 185.5km to 155.5km.
