Mathieu van der Poel claimed victory in a thrilling sprint finish during the ninth stage of the 2026 Tour de France, which was shortened due to extreme temperatures nearing 40C. This win marks his third career stage victory in the prestigious race.

The 31-year-old Dutchman outpaced Tobias Johannessen from Denmark and Tom Pidcock from Great Britain in a breakaway pack, showcasing his sprinting prowess. Pidcock aimed for his second stage win but faced a mechanical issue with his chain cassette, hindering his performance.

Originally set to cover a longer distance, the stage from Malemort to Ussel was reduced by about 30km following a "red alert" issued by French authorities due to the oppressive heat. Despite the conditions, defending champion Tadej Pogacar managed to finish in the chasing peloton, just six seconds behind Van der Poel, maintaining his grip on the yellow jersey as the Tour approaches its first rest day on Monday.

Van der Poel described the day as "super-hard" but noted that the heat felt more manageable than during the earlier stages. He expressed relief at finally feeling strong enough to compete after struggling to recover in previous days.

Having previously won stages in 2021 and 2025, Van der Poel is also a three-time champion of both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Meanwhile, Pidcock reflected on his mechanical setback, stating, "My shifter stopped working... I'm happy for a good day's racing. It's a nice day going into the rest day." Despite the disappointment, the camaraderie among the competitors remained strong.
