Mads Pedersen sprinted ahead from a breakaway to secure victory in the fourth stage of the Tour de France, marking a significant shift in the race dynamics as Tadej Pogacar lost the yellow jersey and dropped to fourth place.

The stage, spanning 181.9 kilometers from Carcassonne to Foix, was challenged by extreme temperatures reaching 40°C in southern France. Pedersen, riding for Lidl-Trek, perfectly timed his finish, while his teammate Quinn Simmons took second place. Raul Garcia Pierna of Movistar finished third, as Torstein Traeen from Uno-X Mobility emerged as the new race leader after finishing eighth, nearly 13 minutes ahead of the main peloton.

Pogacar, a four-time champion, faced a disappointing performance, finishing 33rd and trailing the new leader by seven minutes and 53 seconds. This marks the third consecutive year that Pogacar lost the yellow jersey after just one day.

Riders battled the oppressive heat by using blocks of ice to cool down, as the race allowed them to carry bags of ice and water instead of individual bottles in a new experimental approach.

Traeen, who is the third Norwegian to wear the yellow jersey, expressed his emotions on the podium, reflecting on his battle with cancer in 2022. "It's quite hard for me to understand how big this is," he stated, highlighting the support from his team.

Pedersen acknowledged the collective effort of his team in managing the heat, stating, "We just have to live with the heat, and do what you can to cool down."

Looking ahead, stage five on Wednesday promises a mostly flat route that favors sprinters before the race heads into the challenging Pyrenees mountains on Thursday.
