S.C.U Torreense, the Portuguese second division club, is set to make history by hosting Sunderland in their first-ever European home match in the Europa League on Thursday at 17:45 BST. This follows their remarkable triumph over the giants Sporting to win the Taca de Portugal in May.

Located 35 miles north of Lisbon, Torreense has never played a European home match, but their run in the competition includes tough matches against notable teams like Celtic, Real Sociedad, and Olympiacos.

Andre Sabino, Torreense's director of football, emphasizes the significance of this moment:

This is a landmark moment... To be able to share the same competition and compete against them is a privilege. But we don't want to simply participate. We want to compete.

Unlike previous second-tier teams, Torreense has achieved this qualification through their cup victory. Jose Delgado, a Portuguese football journalist, notes, "It was the first time that a second division team won it... defeating a giant club like Sporting was quite a surprise."

After their initial victory against Lillestrom, expectations have shifted, with many now believing that Torreense can achieve more than just participation in the league.

Due to their home stadium's capacity not meeting UEFA's criteria, Torreense will play in Leiria, approximately 47 miles from home. Sabino acknowledges the logistical challenges but remains grateful for the opportunity:

We have to look at the bigger picture... We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to compete in the Europa League.

Despite the travel, Torreense’s supporters are eager to back their team, with Sabino highlighting the importance of community support:

The response from our supporters has been fantastic... We hope to see Leiria filled with Torreense colours and feel that support from the first minute.
