Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has issued a heartfelt apology following the Spygate scandal that led to his team’s expulsion from the Championship play-offs. In a video released by the club's media team, Eckert expressed, "I hope that over time you can understand and forgive," while taking "full responsibility" for the charges admitted during the English Football League's (EFL) investigation into the club's spying practices from the 2025-26 season.

Despite the controversy, Eckert defended his stance by claiming that spying is a common practice in Germany and Italy, where he previously managed, asserting that it had no impact on sporting performance.

Dragan Solak, Southampton's owner, indicated his intention to retain Eckert despite the damage to the club's reputation. However, the Football Association is currently investigating Eckert's conduct, and potential charges could lead to a ban from English football.

Since taking over from Will Still, Eckert has led Southampton to the top of the Championship standings and reached the FA Cup semi-finals, narrowly missing out on a final spot against Manchester City. Yet, the decision on his future is polarizing among fans and within the club.

Former midfielder Jo Tessem noted the emotional toll of the scandal, stating, "People's kids are wearing Saints shirts to play and having 'cheat' shouted at them. That's serious and it really hurts people."
