Despite achieving England's best-ever World Cup performance on foreign soil, this international break marks a pivotal moment in Thomas Tuchel's tenure as the national team manager.

Tuchel, who signed a contract extension in February that will keep him at the helm through Euro 2028, still enjoys the support of the Football Association. Following the review of England's 2026 World Cup performance, the governing body has deemed the third-placed finish a success.

However, significant anger lingers among some England supporters regarding Tuchel's tactical decisions during the semi-final defeat to Argentina. Reports from Sky Sports News indicated that several players were disappointed by Tuchel's hyper-defensive strategy late in the game, which led to a 2-1 loss. Tuchel's public comments suggesting players retreated too deep have further fueled discontent within the squad.

Now, Tuchel's challenge is to win back the trust of both the players and supporters who had previously supported him since his appointment in January 2025. His popularity among the squad, built on a sense of brotherhood, is threatened by the fallout from the semi-final.

A crucial opportunity arises as England prepares to face the reigning world and European champions, Spain, on September 26. A victory would not only bolster Tuchel's credibility but also instill renewed belief in the squad ahead of the Nations League. Conversely, another defeat could amplify existing criticisms.

Upcoming matches against the Czech Republic and Croatia will serve as further tests for both the players and Tuchel's leadership, making this autumn critical for England's aspirations on the international stage.
