As Fifa grapples with scrutiny from confederations and fans, Thierry Henry has advocated for players to leverage their influence during this turbulent period in international soccer. Speaking with the Guardian alongside Kate Scott and Jamie Carragher, Henry emphasized the importance of player voices in the ongoing political battle for control of the sport.

Henry stated, "For me, the players have more power than they think they have. And if they want it to change, they can make it happen – especially nowadays."

Fifa's challenges have intensified due to multiple scandals related to the upcoming 2026 World Cup and controversial actions by Gianni Infantino, including efforts to sell the World Cup's commercial rights. This has led to significant backlash against the Fifa president, with Uefa considering legal options against him.

Scott, who anchors the CBS panel featuring Henry and Carragher, discussed the parallels between the current Fifa situation and the 2021 Super League debacle. She noted that many in world football are eager for change, reflecting a widespread desire for reform similar to the sentiments surrounding the Super League.

Infantino has faced little opposition in his two re-elections since 2016, with the next vote scheduled for 18 March 2027. Scott remarked on Infantino's strategic prowess in securing alliances, leaving uncertainty about the future of Fifa's leadership.

Henry reiterated his belief in the players’ potential impact, stating, "Players have all the power if they want to, and sometimes they don’t... You saw it with the NBA. You saw it with the NFL. At one point, the players are always on the side: go entertain, take your money, leave."

He concluded with a call to action for players to recognize and utilize their power to effect change in the sport.
