Rory McIlroy has turned his attention to finishing strong in the PGA Tour and DP World Tour seasons after a frustrating week at The 154th Open. Despite being one of the favorites for a second major of the year and seeking his first Open win since 2014, McIlroy struggled at Royal Birkdale, finishing the tournament eight strokes behind leader Sam Burns.

After an opening-round score of 72, McIlroy managed to improve with scores of 67 and 69, but a lackluster one-over 71 on Sunday pushed him further down the leaderboard. He expressed his disappointment, stating, "I was sort of stuck in neutral for most of the week... even par over the weekend is not going to get it done."

In his recent six worldwide starts since defending his title at The Masters, McIlroy has not finished higher than tied-seventh, including a lack of contention at the US Open. Looking ahead, he plans to participate in the FedExCup Play-Offs and then shift his focus to the DP World Tour, with upcoming events at the Amgen Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship in September.

McIlroy reflected on his season, noting its similarity to last year’s, where he started strong but fell off afterward. He aims to enjoy the summer with his family before returning to competitive play, stating, "I'm still in a decent position... in both title races."

As he prepares for the next phase of the season, McIlroy acknowledges the uncertainty regarding the PGA Tour's 15-event minimum requirement for the 2026 season, having only made 11 starts. He emphasized prioritizing other aspects of his life while navigating the evolving landscape of the tour.

The next event on the PGA Tour calendar is the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota, starting Thursday.
