Rory McIlroy has sharply criticized Bryson DeChambeau for his actions during a rules dispute at The Open. The incident unfolded after DeChambeau carded a four-under 66 at Royal Birkdale, putting him just one shot behind the halfway leader, Lucas Herbert. However, a lengthy rules controversy arose when DeChambeau was penalized for allegedly improving his swing line in long grass at the par-four fifth hole, resulting in a two-shot penalty that dropped him to three strokes behind the leader.

DeChambeau's insistence on contesting the ruling led to a delay of nearly 80 minutes before a decision was confirmed, prompting McIlroy to express his discontent. He stated, "Late night for everyone. I won't pretend to be up here and defend Bryson. I'm not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it's performative. I think a lot of it's for attention. To hold the tournament hostage like that... I didn't feel like it was a great look."

The delay also affected tee times for Saturday's third round, which were released late, leading to criticism from fellow players like Marco Penge and Justin Thomas.

In response to the ruling, DeChambeau expressed disappointment on social media, but McIlroy defended the R&A officials' decision, asserting, "I think the two-shot penalty was justified for sure." He noted that the incident was clearly visible, saying, "As soon as he made the step into the ball, we all sort of looked at each other and were like 'that didn't seem right.'"

Grant Moir, the executive director of governance for The R&A, clarified that the penalty under Rule 8.1 applies even if the infraction was accidental. McIlroy concluded by emphasizing the importance of self-policing in golf, especially under circumstances where evidence is evident.
