The closure of the Lloyd Center shopping mall marks the end of an era for Portland, as its iconic ice rink, a beloved community gathering place since 1960, has shut down for good. Originally featuring an outdoor rink, it transitioned to an enclosed space that became a cultural hub, especially during the holiday season with its giant Christmas tree.

Notable moments in its history include a visit from Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and the early skating days of Tonya Harding in 1973. Despite the decline of malls across America, the rink thrived, offering a Learn To Skate USA program with nearly 800 participants last season, making it the largest in Oregon.

The rink's closure is part of a broader trend, with many mall ice rinks disappearing as shopping centers decline. Wendy May, a longtime skater, described the rink as a performance space where community members gathered, and Alec Schmitt, co-director of the Pacific Ice Academy, highlighted its role as a social hub for teens and adults alike.

Despite its smaller size, many skaters returned for the relaxed atmosphere and the friendships they formed. However, with the closure, Portland now lacks an ice rink within city limits, complicating access to skating for families without cars.

Local parents and skaters have formed the Bridgetown Ice Skating Collective (BISC), hoping to establish a new rink amid concerns over the loss of community and accessibility. On its final day, thousands of locals gathered to pay tribute, reflecting on the deep connections fostered at the Lloyd Center rink. Julie Weber, a parent, expressed optimism, stating, "We’ll find those sparks of joy. And I think it’ll work out."
