Tadej Pogacar has successfully undergone surgery for a collarbone fracture sustained during a crash at the Vuelta a Espana, as confirmed by his team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

The six-time grand tour winner was leading the race by nearly four minutes over his closest rival, Enric Mas, when he crashed on a seemingly harmless, flat section of road during stage eight.

His injuries included:

• Deep cuts to his left shoulder and face
• A concussion
• Multiple abrasions
• A displaced left clavicle fracture
• A stable C7 cervical fracture

After initially attempting to remount his bike, Pogacar had to concede he could not continue, marking his first abandonment in a grand tour and the first since Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2023. He was taken to a hospital in Valencia and later transported to Barcelona for surgery, which was briefly delayed due to his concussion.

Dr. Adrian Rotunno, UAE’s medical director, announced on social media that the surgery on Pogacar’s left clavicle was completed successfully. He stated, "The procedure went well and he will remain in hospital for post-operative monitoring for a few days."

As Pogacar begins his recovery process, the team has not confirmed the cause of the crash, though footage suggested he may have hit a rock. Unfortunately, his injuries jeopardize his participation in the upcoming world title defense in Montreal and the European Championships in Ljubljana in October, where he is the reigning champion.
