Katie Ledecky continued her remarkable legacy by winning the 1500m freestyle on the opening night of the Pan Pacific Championships on Wednesday, securing her first international medal on home soil in Irvine, California.

Ledecky, a two-time Olympic champion in this event, started strong, even surpassing her own world-record pace in the early laps of the 30-lap race. She finished with a time of 15m 36.09s, while Lani Pallister of Australia, who chased her closely, claimed silver with a personal best of 15:38.62. Moesha Johnson of Australia took bronze.

In other events, Gretchen Walsh triumphed in the 50m butterfly, finishing in 24.65s, ahead of teammate Kate Douglass, who clocked 25.06s. This marked a strong showing for the United States, which secured four 1-2 finishes throughout the night. Taylor Ruck from Canada earned bronze in 25.23s.

Luca Urlando set a new championship record in the men’s 200 butterfly, finishing at 1:53.11, breaking the previous record of 1:53.80 set by Michael Phelps in 2006. Urlando expressed his joy, stating, "That was like a dream come true."

In the women’s 100-meter backstroke, American teammates Katharine Berkoff and world record holder Regan Smith finished 1-2, with Berkoff winning in 57.93 seconds. Ruck added another bronze to her collection with a time of 58.40.

The Pan Pacific Championships, held every four years, returned after being canceled in 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year's event was relocated to Southern California to provide a major international competition ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
