Concerns have arisen regarding the club's recruitment strategy amid an injury crisis that sidelined 16 players at one point. Paul Rowley stepped down as coach in July after a 46-0 loss to Toulouse, raising alarms about the team's performance.

Jones-Buchanan remarked, "Nothing is given in sport," suggesting that St Helens requires a clear-out of older players who may have overstayed their welcome. He noted that while young talents like Tristan Sailor and Jack Welsby showed promise, the team's overall structure has faltered.

Despite adding experienced players like Shane Wright and David Klemmer, the club struggled to recruit due to salary cap issues. St Helens also lost key players such as Konrad Hurrell and Morgan Knowles during the off-season.

Pundit Jon Wilkin criticized the club's recruitment as "shocking," asserting they failed to replace players adequately and made short-term choices that negatively impacted team performance.
