Hector Bellerin, the former Arsenal and current Real Betis right-back, has voiced concerns about the loss of players in football due to homophobia. During his appearance on Cara Al Show, Bellerin discussed the lack of openly homosexual players in the men's game, stating, "It’s a question I get asked a lot and I haven’t met anyone."

He further elaborated, referencing a conversation with an anthropologist who indicated that non-heterosexual players are leaving the sport annually because they do not feel safe.

Bellerin emphasized that football mirrors societal issues, noting incidents like the recent anti-Muslim chants during a friendly match between Spain and Egypt at the RCDE Stadium. He remarked, "Football has always been a reflection of society. The tense atmosphere and impunity for certain behaviours have led to this type of behaviour being exhibited inside stadiums."

Additionally, Bellerin criticized the football community's response to the genocide in Palestine, contrasting it with the actions taken regarding the Ukraine invasion. He pointed out, "In football, many things were done with the war in Ukraine, with flags on scoreboards and others. Here in Spain with the genocide in Palestine, only Athletic did something when it was impossible not to take a position."

Earlier this season, Athletic Club organized a match between the Basque national team and the Palestine national team, with all proceeds directed towards aid for Gaza, highlighting the need for greater action and awareness in the sport.
