Steve Borthwick is set to have his England contract extended beyond the 2028 Six Nations. The RFU aims to provide this extension to eliminate uncertainty surrounding his future ahead of next year's World Cup. RFU performance director Conor O'Shea emphasized the importance of stability, stating, "You don't want them looking for a job going into [a World Cup]."

Borthwick's leadership follows a challenging Six Nations, where England entered the tournament on an 11-Test winning run but ultimately finished fifth. Despite a victory over Wales, the team suffered four defeats, including a historic loss to Italy and a record home defeat to Ireland. This performance led to a thorough review of England's strategy and coaching approach.

RFU CEO Bill Sweeney confirmed that Borthwick would receive support following the review, highlighting that improvement will require addressing multiple areas rather than seeking a single solution.

In team news, Courtney Lawes and Joe Marchant face a challenge to regain their spots in the England squad as the Gallagher Premiership season approaches. Defence coach Richard Wigglesworth noted that both players must excel in the upcoming fixtures to be considered for selection in the Nations Championship. Lawes, a Test centurion, brings invaluable experience, while Marchant adds depth to the midfield.

Lawes, who previously announced his retirement after the last World Cup, has reignited his ambition to play internationally, potentially eyeing participation in Australia 2027. Wigglesworth expressed enthusiasm for Lawes' return, stating, "He has unbelievable experience, is an England legend and has been flying in pre-season." Both players’ performances will be closely monitored as England prepares for the next competitive phase.
