Villarreal concluded the 2025-26 La Liga season in stunning style, defeating Atletico Madrid 5-1 at La Ceramica, marking a triumphant end to Marcelino Garcia Toral’s second stint as manager.

In the opening minutes, Atletico appeared to control the game, but everything changed at the 30-minute mark when Dani Parejo converted a penalty on his farewell appearance for Villarreal, following a foul on Nicolas Pepe by Juan Musso.

Just four minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead as Ayoze Perez netted his second goal in 18 appearances, showcasing a clinical finish from close range.

The first half saw Villarreal extend their advantage to 3-0 by the 40th minute, with a swift counter-attack culminating in Georges Mikautadze scoring his 15th goal of the season, 13 of which came in La Liga.

Atletico managed to pull one back with a goal from an Antoine Griezmann corner, but Villarreal responded immediately, as Pape Gueye struck from outside the box to restore the three-goal cushion.

Ayoze Perez completed his brace and sealed the match at 5-1 in the 54th minute, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback for Atletico Madrid. Villarreal comfortably managed the remainder of the game and celebrated a heartfelt send-off for Parejo as he exited the pitch for the last time as a Villarreal player.
