Tottenham Hotspur has made a significant move in the transfer market by signing Alice Sombath from Lyonnes for a club record fee, though the exact amount remains undisclosed. This signing surpasses the previous record, which was set when they acquired Signe Gaupset for over £375,000 in January.

Sombath, a 22-year-old France defender, expressed her enthusiasm for joining Spurs. "The league is very competitive, every game is a tough game and that’s what I’m most excited about," she stated. She acknowledged the team's strong performance last season and believes her skills can add value, despite the existing talent.

Having spent six years with Lyonnes, where she won the Champions League, five league titles, and two Coupe de France titles, Sombath brings a wealth of experience. She signed her first professional contract with Lyon after moving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.

Tottenham’s head coach, Martin Ho, praised Sombath for fitting the profile of the team’s vision. "She has already shown real maturity in her performances, and we believe she has all the qualities to continue developing into a top player within our environment," he remarked. He highlighted her aggressive defending style and ambition to improve as key attributes for the club.

Sombath becomes Spurs's sixth signing this summer, joining Shekiera Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra, and Selma Panengstuen. The club is pleased to finalize these deals early, allowing for a comprehensive pre-season.

After finishing fifth in the WSL last season, Tottenham aims to build on this success, having been just four points shy of Manchester United and significantly behind league champions Manchester City.
