Cricket fans at Edgbaston enjoyed a breathtaking view of the partial solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, as the Moon obscured over 90% of the Sun, leaving a striking crescent visible in the sky. This rare phenomenon occurred while spectators watched the match between Birmingham Phoenix and MI London in The Hundred, many equipped with special glasses to safely enjoy the spectacle.

The eclipse marked the fullest sighting in British skies since the total eclipse in 1999.

Other sporting events also unfolded against this unusual backdrop. At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, floodlights lit up the venue in anticipation of the darkening skies. Small groups, including Swedish athletes Erika Warff and Tilde Bjerager, gathered outside Alexander Stadium to witness the event, some with protective paper glasses and others capturing the moment through their phone cameras. However, clouds obscured the peak of the eclipse, which occurred at approximately 7:15 PM.

In Salzburg, football fans attending the UEFA Super Cup match between Aston Villa and Paris St Germain also looked skyward as the eclipse took place about 30 minutes before kick-off, adding a unique twist to the atmosphere in the Austrian city.
