The Norwegian Andreas Leknessund executed a remarkable solo attack on the final climb to secure victory in stage seven of the Vuelta a España. Competing for Uno-X Mobility, Leknessund finished ahead of his teammate and fellow countryman Tobias Johannessen on a poignant day as Norway mourned the passing of King Harald.

Leknessund made his decisive move from a five-rider breakaway just 7.5km from the finish line during the 149.8km ride from Vall d’Alba. This victory marked his first Grand Tour stage win in his Vuelta debut.

“It’s been a special day for the team and also for the whole of Norway,” Leknessund stated, emphasizing the emotional weight of the day. A minute’s silence was observed for King Harald ahead of the stage, and the Uno-X Mobility team donned black armbands in tribute.

Johannessen finished 34 seconds behind Leknessund, having outpaced Wout van Aert, who settled for third place after leading early in the race.

Tadej Pogacar, who has already won three stages, maintained his position in the peloton before accelerating to gain time on his general classification rivals, extending his lead over Enric Mas by 3 minutes 50 seconds.

The race saw Leknessund, Van Aert, Johannessen, Eddie Dunbar (Pinarello Q36.5), and Alexey Lutsenko (NSN) form a strong leading group, building a significant gap ahead of the final climb. Leknessund's bold move allowed him to clinch his long-awaited stage win after finishing as runner-up three times in this year’s Giro d’Italia.

Johannessen praised their teamwork, stating, “That’s what you always dream about when you try to be two guys in the breakaway.”

As the Vuelta progresses, stage eight on Saturday presents a flat 176.4km route from Pucol to Xeraco.
