Maddy McDaniel, the point guard for the South Carolina women's basketball team, has officially withdrawn from the university, confirming that she will not return to the squad. This decision comes less than a month after she initially stepped away from the team for mental health reasons on July 16.

Coach Dawn Staley expressed her continued support for McDaniel, stating, "We respected Maddy's decision in July, and we continue to do that in this next step. She has been a valued part of our program's success, and she and her family will always be part of our Gamecock family. We wish her all the best as she chooses her future moves on and off the basketball court."

McDaniel, who averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 assists in 19.7 minutes per game last season, was expected to step into a larger role following the departure of star point guard Raven Johnson to the WNBA. The Gamecocks, fresh off a national runner-up finish, have depth in the post and added talented guards, including Texas transfer Jordan Lee. However, McDaniel's absence leaves them without a true point guard.

The situation echoes last year's scenario with forward Ashlyn Watkins, who took a leave of absence but returned for her senior season. With McDaniel's departure, the Gamecocks now have 14 players on their roster, leaving one spot open for potential additions, whether it be a high school graduate or an international player.

The South Carolina women's basketball team is set to kick off its 2026-27 season against Maryland on November 2 in Paris, France.
