In the heart of South Africa, Ireland's women's rugby team prepares for a historic series against the Springboks, marking their first-ever matches on South African soil. The two Tests, part of the WVX Global Series, kick off on Saturday at 14:00 BST. For captain Erin King, who celebrated her 23rd birthday just days prior, this trip is both a privilege and a challenge.

King emphasized the significance of this occasion, stating, "We've definitely spoken about the history of getting to play in Cape Town and getting to play in South Africa. Rugby is everything for them. They eat and breathe rugby, and there's so much history there. We’d love to come over, win the two Tests and create a bit of history."

Ireland's recent performance in the WXV Series has been mixed, with a loss to the USA followed by a win against Japan. Meanwhile, South Africa has faced its own struggles, securing victories over Spain and Italy but suffering a heavy defeat by Wales. Both teams enter the match eager to prove themselves.

King noted the importance of physicality, stating, "I think physicality is what will probably win it this weekend, and something that we definitely don't shy away from."

The tour has also provided the squad with bonding experiences, including a safari to explore local wildlife. King reflected on the beauty of South Africa and the significance of team connections. She mentioned, "We know the importance of that connection off-field and how it translates to the on-pitch."

As they look ahead to the next World Cup cycle, King recognizes the long-term benefits of touring together.

Additionally, hooker Neve Jones is set to earn her 50th cap this weekend, with King praising her contributions to the team. "Neve's the head of the social committee. She's always keeping us entertained," King said, highlighting the camaraderie within the squad.

Despite being relatively new to the 15-a-side format, having transitioned from Sevens, King has quickly risen to leadership, showcasing her growth and adaptability in the sport.
