Esther Henseleit secured her place in the Solheim Cup for Team Europe after a thrilling finish at the AIG Women’s Open, denying Chiara Tamburlini an automatic spot. The qualification concluded on Sunday at Royal Lytham & St Annes, with the top two players from the European Solheim Cup points list and the next six from the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings clinching their spots.

Tamburlini entered the tournament with a slim 1.1-point lead over Helen Briem but missed the cut, jeopardizing her qualification. Meanwhile, Henseleit, who was already set to qualify through her world ranking, needed a strong finish to surpass Tamburlini. A remarkable final-hole birdie pushed her into a playoff against Shiho Kuwaki, where she ultimately finished second after losing on the second extra hole.

Henseleit expressed her disappointment, stating, "Happy with how I gave myself the opportunity to win and how I handled myself...just got a bit unlucky on the second play-off hole there."

Lottie Woad also aimed to overtake Tamburlini but ended up tied for sixth, solidifying her spot through world rankings. Other players confirming their automatic selections included Celine Boutier, Carlota Ciganda, Maja Stark, and Linn Grant, with Nanna Koerstz Madsen taking the final spot.

Anna Nordqvist, Team Europe's captain, will finalize her lineup with four captain's picks on Monday, emphasizing the importance of performance in the selection process. Leona Maguire, a previous Solheim Cup winner, and others like Julia Lopez Ramirez and Nastasia Nadaud are in contention for the picks.

Tamburlini, who has had a challenging season on the LPGA Tour despite three wins on the Ladies European Tour, expressed her desire to represent Europe, saying, "I want it [Solheim Cup spot] so badly...the margins are so small."

With the Solheim Cup set for September 11-13 at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, the excitement continues to build as the final selections are awaited.
