Historically, during the solar eclipse in August 1999, a League Cup football match between Torquay United and Portsmouth at Plainmoor stadium faced a postponement. Authorities, including Devon and Cornwall Police, cited an influx of tourists to the coast, which left local resources strained and unable to manage stadium crowds safely. The match was ultimately played six days later.
