Manchester City is actively pursuing Geronimo Rulli to step in as the new backup goalkeeper following the impending departure of James Trafford to Leeds United. The Premier League champions are prioritizing this move to bolster their goalkeeping options ahead of the upcoming season.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Rulli, currently with Olympique Marseille, is keen on the switch, which gives Manchester City significant leverage in ongoing negotiations. Romano reported on July 29, 2026:

• “EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City want Geronimo Rulli as new backup goalkeeper to replace James Trafford.”
• “Argentinian GK understood to be keen on the move; Olympique Marseille aware of interest, #MCFC on it.”

Rulli’s potential signing would signify a remarkable return for the goalkeeper, who initially joined Manchester City from Deportivo Maldonado in 2016. Despite high expectations, he never made a competitive appearance for the club, as he was loaned back to Real Sociedad shortly after joining.

Nearly a decade later, Rulli has garnered significant experience, playing for clubs such as Villarreal, Ajax, and Marseille, and has won prestigious titles, including the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA World Cup with Argentina. Now, City aims to complete this chapter of Rulli’s career, marking a fresh start for both the player and the club.
