Shane Lowry faced a challenging second day at the US PGA Championship, struggling alongside fellow European stars. After starting just a shot off the lead, Lowry's six-over round of 76 has him set to miss the cut, a fate also shared by Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre, who shot rounds of 73 and 75 respectively.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one and defending champion, began the day in a seven-way tie for the lead. Despite a rocky start with three early bogeys, he managed to rally after the turn, finishing two shots behind the clubhouse leader, Alex Smalley, who posted a score of four under par.

Rory McIlroy started his quest for a seventh major title poorly, carding a four-over opening round. As he began his second round, he needed to get back to three over to ensure he made the cut for the weekend.

Lowry's round quickly deteriorated, featuring a double bogey on the 17th and three additional bogeys on the back nine. Fleetwood's struggles continued as he failed to recover from three front-nine bogeys.

In contrast, Scheffler and his group faced a tough battle, with Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick also faltering. Rose managed a birdie at 12 but faced challenges, including a double bogey on the par-three 14th.

Cameron Young made a significant move to two under, while Rose finished strong with an eagle at the last hole, ending at three under. Meanwhile, Smalley fluctuated in performance but concluded with two late birdies to finish with a round of 69. Hideki Matsuyama matched the best round of the championship with a 67, while Chris Gotterup shone with a superb 65, taking the clubhouse lead at three under.
