On August 5, a Puma logistics warehouse was obliterated by a Russian missile, highlighting the ongoing struggles of the Ukrainian people since the invasion. For Serhii Palkin, chief executive of Shakhtar Donetsk, this incident is another chapter in a long history of adversity. The warehouse contained retail supplies for the upcoming 2026-27 home kits, yet for Palkin, such losses have become commonplace.

Reflecting on the missile strike, Palkin recounted a recent meeting in Kyiv interrupted by the sound of explosions nearby. He explained, "Can you imagine how mentally we can work after that?" This is the reality for Shakhtar, who have been displaced from their home for over 12 years due to conflict.

As Shakhtar prepares to face AEK Athens at Stamford Bridge, their shirts will display the slogan Invest In Ukraine. This initiative aims to shift the narrative towards the investment opportunities in Ukraine's evolving energy sector. Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, emphasized London's status as a financial hub, stating, "We are building a bridge between the capital markets and Ukraine."

Despite needing nearly $100 billion to restore its energy infrastructure, investment continues to flow into Ukraine. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation recently approved a $97.5 million loan for DTEK's crucial battery storage project.

Shakhtar faces logistical challenges as they travel for their European matches, requiring extensive land and air travel, often complicated by border delays and air raid sirens. Palkin noted the mental and physical toll this takes on the team, but they strive to perform competitively, earning a point against PSV in their Champions League opener.

While the off-field circumstances are extraordinary, the team aims to deliver strong performances on the pitch, representing resilience and hope for Ukraine's future.
