UEFA has imposed a €90,000 (£77,000) fine on Red Star Belgrade following unacceptable chants by their supporters honoring convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic, who passed away on the same day as their European match against Viktoria Plzeň on 27 August.

During the match, which ended in a 5-1 defeat, fans chanted Mladic's name, saluted him, and displayed a banner praising his actions. Mladic, a Bosnian Serb commander, was responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where over 8,000 Muslims were killed, alongside numerous other war crimes. He died at 84 while serving a life sentence for genocide in The Hague.

UEFA's sanctions against Red Star include:

• A €90,000 fine for inappropriate chanting and "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour."
• A ban on selling tickets to supporters for their upcoming away match against Lugano in the Conference League.
• A deferred secondary away ticket ban contingent on a two-year probationary period.

This incident adds to Red Star's history of UEFA disciplinary actions related to fan behavior, notably involving racist slurs targeting Roma people. Mladic's conviction in 2017 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) marked him as a perpetrator of one of the most heinous crimes in history.

The atrocities committed under Mladic’s orders included systematic killings and mass graves, with reports indicating that his health had deteriorated significantly before his death in a UN prison hospital.
